Jimmy Carter death: What is a national day of mourning?

Following Jimmy Carter’s death at the age of 100, his funeral will be first for a Democratic president in more than half a century

Heartfelt tributes are pouring in from world leaders, honoring the life and humanitarian legacy of James Earl “Jimmy” Carter Jr., the former U.S. president who has passed away at the age of 100.

Carter, a former naval officer, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and peanut farmer who became the 39th president of the United States, died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday, December 29, according to his son.

Serving as president from 1977 to 1981, Carter is equally celebrated for his decades of humanitarian work after leaving office, including his efforts with Habitat for Humanity and his role in brokering peace agreements.

President-elect Donald Trump remarked that Carter is owed a “debt of gratitude,” while President Joe Biden remembered him as a “dear friend.” Former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama praised Carter for leading “the longest and most impactful post-presidency in American history.”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer commended Carter’s “remarkable commitment to social justice and human rights,” and King Charles III expressed gratitude for his dedication to “promoting peace.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy highlighted Carter’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s “ongoing fight for freedom,” while Israeli President Isaac Herzog described him as “courageous and beloved.”

What is a National Day of Mourning?

The nation is set to observe its first funeral for a Democratic president in over 50 years following the death of Jimmy Carter on Sunday at the age of 100. Carter, the longest-living president in U.S. history, also held the record for the longest post-presidency, having left office at the age of 56 in 1980.

The last Democratic president to pass away was Lyndon Baines Johnson, who died in 1973 at the age of 64, just a few years after leaving office.

Since Johnson’s death, the U.S. has held four state funerals for former presidents: Johnson’s in 1973, Ronald Reagan’s in 2004, Gerald Ford’s in 2007, and George H.W. Bush’s most recently in 2018.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy

We extend our deepest condolences to the American people and the family of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on his passing. Although he led during a time when Ukraine had not yet achieved independence, his heart steadfastly supported our ongoing fight for freedom.

We are profoundly grateful for his unwavering commitment to his Christian faith, democratic principles, and his support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unprovoked aggression.

President Carter dedicated his life to championing peace and defending human rights around the globe. As we honor his memory, let us remember the importance of peace and the need for global unity against those who threaten these fundamental values.

May his legacy live on forever.
