"King and Garth shine as Australia extend Ashes lead with low-scoring victory over England"

At Melbourne's CitiPower Centre, Australia reduced England to 9-146 in the 43rd over, leaving set batter Amy Jones (47* off 103 balls) and No.11 Lauren Bell with the daunting task of chasing 34 runs. With Jones battling to farm the strike and Australia maintaining relentless pressure, England needed 28 runs from 18 balls when a chaotic 48th over saw Annabel Sutherland bowl two waist-high no-balls, forcing her removal from the attack.

Sent in to bat by England, who hoped the early morning cloud cover would assist their new-ball bowlers, Alyssa Healy picked up where she left off in the first ODI, smashing six boundaries to put pressure on Lauren Filer. Healy's aggressive start ended when Lauren Bell had her caught behind for a brisk 19-ball 29. Ellyse Perry then took charge, steadying the innings and shielding opener Phoebe Litchfield, who struggled for fluency. Litchfield battled her way to 29 from 50 deliveries before being trapped lbw while attempting a reverse sweep off Sophie Ecclestone's second ball. Beth Mooney was the next to fall, also lbw to Ecclestone, but Perry kept Australia on track, reaching her half-century off 52 balls. At that point, both Perry and Australia seemed poised for a strong total. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Perry fell to the off-spin of Alice Capsey. England successfully reviewed an lbw decision, triggering a spectacular collapse that left Australia scrambling.

Earlier, England’s spinners Sophie Ecclestone (4-35) and Alice Capsey (3-22) wreaked havoc on Australia’s batting lineup. After cruising at 2-131 in the 24th over, Australia collapsed spectacularly, losing 8-49 to be bowled out for 199 in 44.3 overs—their worst ODI collapse since 2004 and their lowest home total in a one-dayer since 2009. Ellyse Perry was the standout batter with 60 off 74 balls.

Needing a special bowling effort to stay ahead in the multi-format, points-based series, Garth (3-37) and King (4-25) delivered in style. Garth made early inroads, dismissing openers TaAustralia pulled off a stunning victory, defending a modest total of 180 to claim a thrilling 21-run win in the second Ashes ODI, thanks to a brilliant bowling performance by Kim Garth and Alana King.

mmy Beaumont (3) and Maia Bouchier (9), while King’s leg-spin dismantled the middle order.

Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt steadied England with a 41-run partnership, but Australia’s spinners turned the tide. Ashleigh Gardner removed Knight (18) with a sharp return catch, and King bowled Danni Wyatt-Hodge for a golden duck with a beautifully tossed-up delivery.

King then claimed the crucial wicket of Sciver-Brunt (35), who was caught at cover by Phoebe Litchfield, leaving England at 5-84 and still 97 runs short of the target. Despite Jones’ resistance, Australia’s bowlers held their nerve, securing a memorable win to extend their lead in the Ashes series.
