Bondi announces lawsuits against states for alleged noncompliance with immigration actions: ‘A new DOJ’
"If states fail to comply with federal law, we will hold them accountable," Bondi stated.
Trump Administration Sues New York Over Immigration Policies
The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against New York, Governor Kathy Hochul, and Attorney General Letitia James, accusing them of violating federal law by protecting illegal immigrants. Newly sworn-in Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the lawsuit on Wednesday.
"This is a new DOJ," Bondi declared at a news conference. "New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. That stops today."
Also named in the lawsuit is Mark Schroeder, commissioner of the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. Bondi cited New York’s Green Light Law, also known as the Driver's License Act, which allows undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.

Bondi Criticizes New York’s Green Light Law, Vows Further Legal Action
New York’s Green Light Law not only allows undocumented immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses but also restricts federal agencies from accessing state driver’s license records.
"They have Green Light Laws, meaning they’re giving a green light to illegal aliens in New York," Attorney General Pam Bondi said. "Law enforcement officers cannot check their identity if they pull them over, nor do they have access to their background. This puts officers' lives at risk every single day."
Bondi emphasized the Justice Department’s commitment to enforcing federal law. "If you don't comply with federal law, we will hold you accountable. We did it to Illinois—strike one. Strike two is New York. And if you are a state not complying with federal law, you're next. Get ready."
Last week, the Justice Department petitioned a federal judge to overturn sanctuary policies in Illinois and Chicago.
Bondi was joined by "Angel Mom" Tammy Nobles of Maryland, whose 20-year-old daughter, Kayla Hamilton, was raped and murdered by an illegal immigrant and MS-13 gang member in 2022.

Tammy Nobles, speaking through tears on Wednesday, criticized the Department of Homeland Security for failing to do its job in her daughter’s tragic case.
"They didn’t check his background," Nobles said, sharing her heartbreaking story. "I’m so thankful to Pam for having me here today, and to Trump and everyone who gave me the platform to share her story. This needs to stop."
The suspect, Walter Martinez, an MS-13 gang member from El Salvador, entered the U.S. illegally in March 2022 as an unaccompanied minor through Texas. He was apprehended by Border Patrol and later sent to Maryland to live with a sponsor.
Bondi Urges States with Sanctuary Policies to Comply with Federal Law
Four months after being released, Martinez moved to a mobile home in Aberdeen, where he was accused of murdering Kayla Hamilton.During a news conference, Attorney General Pam Bondi called on states with sanctuary policies to adhere to federal law.
"We don’t want to sue you. We don’t want to prosecute anyone. We just want compliance with the law," Bondi stated. "This is simple. An MS-13 member murdered her daughter. This is happening across the country."
She continued, "One Angel Mom is too many. And we have Angel Moms all over this nation who shouldn’t be suffering this pain. Comply with the law. This is the last thing we want to be doing."
