Grave of Wolfgang Schäuble Desecrated, Investigation Underway
A hole over a meter deep was discovered at the grave of German politician Wolfgang Schäuble by city workers in Offenburg on Monday morning, prompting an investigation.
Authorities reported that the hole, measuring approximately 1.2 meters (3.9 feet) deep, did not reach Schäuble’s coffin. The former Bundestag president passed away in December at the age of 81.
The Offenburg police’s criminal investigation department has taken over the case in coordination with the public prosecutor's office. So far, no information has emerged regarding a possible motive, and police are appealing for witnesses.
Who Was Wolfgang Schäuble?
A key figure in Germany’s post-war history, Schäuble was a long-serving member of the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU). He held numerous influential roles, including President of the Bundestag from 2017 to 2021.
As the longest-serving member of any democratic parliament in German history, Schäuble played a pivotal role in shaping German politics. He was instrumental in Germany’s reunification in 1990 and later guided the eurozone through its debt crisis, advocating for strict austerity measures during the 2009 Greek financial crisis.
Political Reactions: Shock and Condemnation
News of the desecration has sparked outrage across the German political landscape.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser condemned the act as a "disgusting and despicable crime" that must be prosecuted with full force.
Bärbel Bas, Schäuble’s successor as Bundestag president, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. "It is intolerable that there are individuals who would desecrate Wolfgang Schäuble’s grave and disturb his peace," she stated.
Authorities continue their investigation as political figures and the public await further developments.
