A federal lawsuit filed in California accuses Bumble Bee Foods of "knowingly benefiting" from forced labor and other abuses in its supply chain.

Four Indonesian fishers claim they endured similar mistreatment on three separate boats supplying Bumble Bee, including physical abuse, excessive work without rest days, and denial of medical care.

“These men sought good jobs to support their families and secure a better future,” said Agnieszka Fryszman, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, in a press release on March 12. “Instead, they claim they were trapped—isolated at sea, beaten with metal hooks, deprived of food, forced to work nonstop, and threatened with financial penalties if they attempted to leave.”

The plaintiffs' lawyers believe this is the first case against a U.S. company under the Trafficking Victims Protection Act for forced labor at sea.

Bumble Bee, the leading seller of canned and pouched tuna according to the Seafood Stewardship Index, was acquired by Taiwanese fishing giant FCF Co. Ltd. for $925 million after filing for bankruptcy in 2019. The company declined to comment on the lawsuit Monday.
