On Saturday, President Trump encouraged Americans to 'hang tough' while spending the day golfing, as his baseline 10% universal tariffs officially took effect.

WASHINGTON — On Saturday, President Donald Trump urged Americans to "hang tough" and played a second consecutive round of golf as his sweeping 10% tariffs on imports from all U.S. trading partners took effect.

The announcement of the broad tariffs on Wednesday triggered a sharp market downturn, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping 9.2%, the S&P 500 falling 10.5%, and the Nasdaq sliding 11.4%.

“This is an economic revolution, and we will win. Hang tough — it won’t be easy, but the end result will be historic,” Trump posted on Truth Social Saturday morning.

The Trump administration implemented a 10% minimum tariff on all imports into the United States, along with steeper reciprocal tariffs targeting major trading partners such as China and the European Union. The baseline tariff took effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on Saturday, while the reciprocal tariffs are set to begin on April 9.

Trump has argued that the increased tariffs — aimed at reversing decades of globalization — are essential for revitalizing America’s declining domestic manufacturing industries and ensuring fair competition with countries that tax U.S. exports.

Among the measures is a 34% tariff on top trading rival China, added to a recently imposed 20% levy on Chinese goods, effectively subjecting Chinese imports to a combined 54% tariff.

In a sharp escalation of the global trade war, China responded to Trump's tariffs on Friday by imposing its own 34% reciprocal tariffs on all U.S. imports.

“China has been hit much harder than the USA — not even close,” Trump wrote in a social media post on Saturday. “They, and many other nations, have treated us unsustainably badly. We have been the dumb and helpless ‘whipping post,’ but not any longer. We are bringing back jobs and businesses like never before.”

Trump posted his message on Truth Social shortly before participating in a senior championship at Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida, located north of his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach. His golf outing coincided with widespread "Hands Off" protests, as large crowds gathered at more than 1,000 demonstrations nationwide — including in Washington, D.C. — to voice opposition to his presidency and recent actions.
